Follow in the footsteps of the Sami and experience Arctic nature in its purest form. During this special day trip, you team up with your own reindeer. After a brief instruction, you take your place in the sleigh and steer your team along a route of approximately 10 kilometers through the silent, white forests surrounding Kiruna.

It is an active yet meditative experience; the only sounds you hear are the crunching of the snow under the wooden runners and the breathing of the reindeer. Halfway through, we stop by a crackling campfire for an authentic lunch. The guide prepares suovas (traditionally smoked reindeer meat) over the open fire, served on fresh gáhkku bread. A moment of pure tranquility and connection with the centuries-old traditions of the North.

An authentic encounter with the far north

Your adventure begins with the reindeer herders in Jukkasjärvi. Upon arrival, you are welcomed into a world where tradition and nature go hand in hand. We get ready for the expedition and you are fitted with full gear: warm thermal overalls, sturdy shoes, hats, and gloves. After an extensive introduction to the reindeer and clear instructions on how to steer the sled, we are ready to depart. No barking dogs here, but the serene tranquility of a sled gliding through the fairytale winter landscape.

Day 1: Welcome, reindeer sled excursion including lunch, dinner, and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 2: Breakfast and one last meeting with the reindeer before your adventure ends around 11:00 AM.

Spending the night with the reindeer

At the Lodge, you will stay in a unique location, right next to the reindeer herds. The accommodations are small-scale and exude the atmosphere of Sápmi. You will sleep in a cozy wooden forest cabin. The cabin is furnished with natural materials, comfortable beds, and warm reindeer hides for that true wilderness feeling.

Warm up in the communal wood-fired sauna or enjoy the hot tub under the starry sky. The lodge is the ideal place to unwind and (with a little luck) spot the Northern Lights.

Up to 3 people can stay in the forest cabin. Each 20 m² cabin features a double bed (1.60 x 2.00 m), a wood-burning stove, electric heating, a refrigerator, and a dining area. Four of the five cabins also have a sofa bed (1.60 x 1.80 m), suitable for another adult and one or two children. The interior is inspired by nature and Sami culture, creating a cozy and authentic atmosphere.

Taste the flavors of Sámi culture

Lunch: Halfway through the sleigh ride, you will pause outdoors for an authentic lunch. Enjoy suovas (smoked reindeer meat) grilled over an open fire and served on traditional gáhkku bread.

Dinner: In the evening, you will dine at restaurant Ovttas for an atmospheric dinner.

Breakfast: In the morning, a hearty Scandinavian breakfast awaits you at the lodge, ensuring you start your day with a full stomach.

Reindeer Herder for a Day

The focus of this module is on the special bond between humans and animals.

Reindeer sleigh riding: You aren't just sitting in the sleigh, you're driving it yourself! You lead your own reindeer on a journey of approximately 10 kilometers through snowy forests and across frozen plains.

Cultural experience: Learn all about the centuries-old traditions of the Sami, reindeer herding, and life in the Arctic climate. You will have ample opportunity to feed the reindeer and admire them up close.

Participants: Minimum 2 people. The excursion takes place in small, personal groups.
Age: A minimum age of 16 applies to driving the reindeer sleigh yourself.
High season surcharge: For bookings between 24 December and 6 January, a surcharge of €50 per person applies.
